Today's Tip - Watering in the Heat
This might be redundant for some, but it's an important reminder to "stick your
finger in it" before watering your plants.
A lot of the states are in a heat dome this weekend so you may think the plants need extra water because of the heat. BUT before you reach for that water can, check to see if your plant needs it first. Overwatering can prove just as fatal as under-watering as most miniature garden plants need the soil
to dry out to damp in between watering sessions. If you don't let the soil dry out in between waterings, it will drown as the roots won't be able to breathe.
The easiest, handiest, least expensive water meter any gardener can have is your finger. Stick your finger at least 1 inch deep into the top of the soil, if it's wet, wait and check again tomorrow. And if it's damp you can water - like rung sponge
damp.
Another really handy way to check the water content of your containers (if they are small enough) is to pick up the container. If it's light, it will need water if it's heavy, probably wait a day or two before watering but always refer to the finger test a for more accurate reading.
