Spring is in the Air!

Hi !

I hope this finds you with visions of spring gardening dancing in your head. I've been chomping-at-the-bit to get outside in my full-sized garden with my clippers in one hand and a rake in the other... BUT not. quite. yet. 

Sigh. 

Cue: Miniature Gardening. 

( I bet you saw that coming. 😆 )

We don't need a season nor a reason to garden in miniature AND we know that a container can be planted at anytime, right?

Just follow the "right plant for the right place" by choosing WHERE your miniature garden will live. It doesn't matter where you build the garden - it matters where you will place that garden after you're finished making it. 

How fun is that? Why are you still sitting there? Make a miniature garden! 😀

A Miniature Garden I made for a video series this week that's coming up. You might remember this wonderful pot from the Spain garden in the Prop Shop book. The "Spain Garden" grew for over 6 years before needing redoing. You can see why I suggest investing in great containers for your miniature gardens - not only do they look great all the time, you can keep replanting them. Check out your local independent garden center for the best selections - the pots found in big box store are not very inspiring. 

About the Plants: 

The yellow tree in the back is the Sunny Swirl Hinoki Cypress (Chamaecyparis obtusa 'Sunny Swirl'.) It looks like a threadbranch but it's not. It really is a fun tree to grow. Hardy to -20F. 

To the right is the Jersey Jewel Japanese Holly (Ilex crenata 'Jersey Jewel') another fun tree to grow in a cool-sun/eastern-sun spot. A handsome evergreen that, if it's happy, will get the tiniest flowers on it in late spring.

In front of that is the Mossy Saxifrage (Saxifraga x arendsii 'Touran Scarlet') - a fun rockery plant that looks like a tiny shrub. To the left of it is another handsome plant, the Red Thyme (Thymus serpyllum 'Coccineus') and behind the rocker is Dwarf Mondo Grass or Ophiopogon japonica 'Nana'.

About the Garden:
 

This garden can be grown in full sun - morning sun/eastern sun/cool sun are all the same "sun" which really means this pot would be happy kept out of that hot afternoon sun. As a group, it's hardy to -20F.

The garden will grow together for at least 2 years before needing one "bedding plants" to be divided or replace. I might need to trim the Hinoki away from the Jersey Jewel as I've planted them pretty close together OR maybe take the Jersey Jewel out after a 3 to 5 years. It might be big enough for its own miniature garden.
