Hey, !
Happy National Miniature Garden Month!
I hope this finds you enjoying your miniature gardening or planning your miniature gardening! It's been a weird week all-around so escaping to your garden bench to putter and play is highly recommended!
When the world gets "cray-cray" it's time to "create-create!" Remember that disconnecting and taking a break is really a thing. :o)
Today's (Long) Tip for Easy Summer Maintenance
Set yourself up for the summer by
planning and planting for easy maintenance and easier watering. Plant in groups, or place your containers in groups, to create a micro-environment to help keep the plants happy.
How this works: the more plants you have in one spot, the more they work together to keep their immediate environment cool and damp -
perfect conditions for the hottest months, even-if-only for a couple/few hours each day.
This is why, when you drive through your local tree-filled park on a hot summer day, you can feel the sudden coolness and difference in temperature. The shade cast by the trees keep the lower plant layers happy and in dappled shade which will
naturally maintain evenly soil damp so everybody is happy.
Another example: think of one tree in the middle of an empty field trying to grow. Then consider the same tree, living with other trees and shrubs around it. It will simply grow better naturally, because the group is providing shade and humidity to each
other. (There's a metaphor in here somewhere. :o)
What I'm suggesting is the exact same thing, but on a much smaller scale because, um, it's a miniature garden...
You also only
have to drag the hose / set up irrigation for that one area. Easier maintenance, no?
If you're planting in-ground, include full-sized trees and shrubs around the miniature garden area - or nestle the scene in-among the full sized plants.
If you've already planted in-ground, include full-sized garden plants on the back-side or sides of the miniature garden. You know, where all the weeds grow. Lol! (Choose the right plant for the right place.)
If you are
miniature gardening in a pot, or pots, arrange them all together in an "instagrammable" design. By grouping them together, they'll keep their immediate environment damper and cooler than if they were placed separately.
