Down by the Sea Miniature Garden Hi , Or, I was going to title
this Gazette, "The World's Easiest Aquarium: Just Add Water." Steve and I hope this finds you well, safe and enjoying the summer months. Our hearts go out to all those in harm's way as Ma Nature does her thing. We are especially thinking of all our miniature garden friends in Kentucky. We hope you and yours remain safe. See below for the details on today's garden. There are a bunch of new plants and accessories up in the store too. We just got in a fresh batch of trees, shrubs and ground covers because... you know what I'm going to say... because you can plant a miniature garden at any time of year if you're planting in a container! And, after working on the ever-growing section on Inground Miniature Gardening for the Miniature Garden Society, let me reaffirm that miniature gardening in pots is certainly faster and much easier - but also equally rewarding and just as satisfying now that I've figured out how to grow one the right way. Lol! But you
probably knew I would say that too. :o) Stay safe! Whatever you do, make it fun! Janit Calvo, Head MG, Owner Two Green Thumbs Living Miniature Garden Center ~~~ The Nana Hinoki Cypress that got a bit leggy living in a container for 10 years. It was a few years old when we transplanted it too so this tree is probably closer to 20 years old. As I was pruning and wiring it I stopped, because it
looked so aquatic that I had to make into some sort of sea floor... About Today's Miniature Garden: If you have my second book,
the Gardening in Miniature Prop Shop book, you may have seen this idea before. It came after I tried miniature-garden-aqua-scaping with disastrous results. I LOVE fish tanks but I found I was just not that into them to keep-up with the maintenance - and I hated killing fish! BUT with this Under the Sea Miniature Garden I can have my fish tank, (with a little imagination,) and, grow-in a fun bonsai experiment at the same time. I think the Cypress is the Nana variety (Chameacyparis obtusa 'Nana') that has been in this pot for about 10 years. You can see how it's grown leggy and kinda ugly. I was in the process of wiring it to practice my bonsai and it really looked quite aquatic - so I went with it. Those Alpine Water Ferns were already established, looking nice and random. (They aren't water plants, just called that.) I added some sand and mini shells.
Drilled and staked the wee fist and - ta-da! Look Ma! No wet sleeves! :o) Are you interested in this as an accessory and sand kit for your miniature garden? Let me know and I'll figure it out... I've been loving this idea for years and every time I put one together, I giggle. Hit reply and let me know if you would like to see an Under the Sea Kit - complete with fish, flying turtles, ocean sand, tiny mini shells and more?? Up on the Mini Garden Guru Blog This Week! Mini Mulch is BACK - We have the "Compost Mulch" which is finer, and the "Bark Mulch" is a bit chunkier - but small chunks because we need them small, right? Linked below: SEE them up in the Store: (Thanks Jodie! ;o) The container customized for a display for the Northwest Flower and Garden Show in 2012. It was an urban fairy fantasy theme and, although it didn't win any awards, (I never did at that show,) Andrew Beckman, the editor-in-chief at Timber Press,
called it the "most creative display in the show. Hey, we have to take our kudos wherever we can, eh?

ABOUT OUR SHIPPING:
All shipping costs are checked by Steve and we refund any savings promptly because of our wide range of unique inventory: we ship tiny miniatures, heavy patio materials and living plants, sometimes the automatic shipping calculator "packs" the order in multiple boxes which costs more. Steve can pack better than any online shipping
calculator can - if we can save you money on shipping, we will.
