Hi , Happy September from your friends in the northwest corner of the US! I hope this finds you savoring these wonderful fall days too. As I write, the sun is just starting to come-out and the clouds are clearing, just in time to get some puttering done in our big inground miniature garden that I'm obviously smitten with. Honestly, I'm like a kid in a candy store with this hobby! There's a big head's up this week - it's a mini garden ALERT: It's fall planting time! Fall has become the BEST time to start a miniature garden, especially if you're
building or adding to an inground miniature or fairy garden. It's also a good idea if you are planting any larger containers now too. With the summer weather heating up and getting drier, it's now more important than ever to time your planting to the best of your ability to save you time and money - and water! AND it a
perfect time to divide your ground covers - aka miniature garden bedding plants too! Lotsa new things happening up in the store this week. We have our fresh "bedding plants," new miniature and dwarf trees and shrubs and... Boo! Halloween items are now up in the store. Time to start thinking about makin' it a "little"
scary! Grab a cuppa and dig in! Stay safe, stay sane with a little miniature gardening each and every day... :o) Oh, and whatever you do, make it fun! Janit Calvo, Head MG, Owner Two Green Thumbs Living Miniature Garden Center ABOVE: One of the very few times I got Steve to help with a photo shoot. I even got to paint his nails and color his hand green... Lol! ~~~ A Blast from the Past: Our "Garden Shed Garden" that won Best of Show at the fall Seattle Miniature Show in 2005. A
Part of History HerstoryI stumbled
across this photo today, looking for examples of "fall" in the archives and thought to share this little piece of my history in building this wonderful hobby. It was a Dark and Stormy DayIt was a cold, dark fall day spent at the Fremont Sunday Market, struggling for sales and not having any fun. I was really questioning my life
choices (read: I needed to find a real paying job) as Steve and I packed up our booth, grumbling at each other because it was a super-lousy day and we just wanted to get dry, warm and sit down with a cold beer. I had dropped off this display garden on the Friday of the Seattle Miniature Show, not expecting any response from my work because I was pairing
living plants with miniatures which was completely outside of the "dollhouse miniature" thing. After all, miniatures are delicate and collectible and handmade and... "it's a living garden??" as one of the many miniaturists pointed out. An "Ah-Ha" Moment When I came back to the show to pick up this display garden at the end of the day on Sunday, I learned I won the Best of Show award. The owner of the show at the time had to tell me twice because I didn't believe her. I had to fight back the
tears. Winning that award that day encouraged me to continue my work of building and spreading the joy of the new gardening in miniature hobby - despite not having an established market, no dependable product lines and virtually no following for it. (I learned
later that it's not a good thing when starting a business!) I plugged-on and here I am - with an established market and a real following! How is that for faith? Lol! About this Garden-Shed-GardenThis miniature garden has gone through several reincarnations since, and the latest one is shown below. I don't think any of the original plants
from 2005 are left in this garden but this current set up has been growing in this box for at least 8 years now. There has been some changes throughout the years with the perennial groundcovers we use as "mini bedding plants." The box is 2 feet by 3 feet and made of scrap wood - AND it's still intact. But my point
is we've had nothing but fun with this size of container! It really helped that we put some "feet" on it with strips of wood nailed to the bottom so it's off the ground by about an inch. That's enough space to let air through and prevent the bottom from rotting quickly. I'm not sure how much longer it will last, as we've been using it now for 17 years, but I'll let you know when it finally gives up. Miniature gardening is an adventure, not an event! :o) Up on the Mini Garden Guru Blog This Week! Click in for more... THIS Rock Garden Japanese Holly is rockin'
the berries this season! We don't see this happen every year but when it does, it's a real treat. The berries depend upon wether the flowers were pollinated in the springtime. Sometimes the bees don't find them at the nursery in Oregon where they are grown so not every Rock Garden Holly will have berries. (Inedible BTW!) ~~~ Links to
