Hi ,
I was told by a subscriber years ago that she really enjoyed my little notes in this here Mini Garden Gazette, explaining where I am when I write this. But this Gazette goes out to miniature gardeners in over 30 countries - so I often wonder if you like to hear about my weather - ?
Because right now, I don't. Lol! "It's gonna snow! It's gonna snow!" The news stations are all a-buzz with the upcoming SNOW-MAGEDON 2020!
And, being raised in Toronto, I know how mild our "snowstorms" can get - but I will keep you posted nonetheless. :o)
That said, here are some winter-y reminders:
- - If you're in the middle of winter already, the biggest takeaway is to water your outdoor container plants. It's better that the roots stay frozen than to get freeze-dried. Regular, cold water is perfect.
- - If you are heading into wintery weather now: Go through your garden and look at your individual plants to make sure they are all hardy. Pull the tender potted plants closer to the house. Get paper sacks, burlap or at least some plastic sheets/bags to wrap any in-ground tender plants.Take off this cover in the daytime, replace for the night when the temps dip.
- Then take another lap around the garden and collect all your ceramic pots and garden art that can't freeze. (I always forget this one!)
- Stay warm and cozy!
The above photo is an update of our Miniature Veteran's Garden installation by the Miniature Garden Society at the Old Soldier's Home in Orting, just south of Seattle. I forgot to update you last month when we decorated it for the holidays. It's still doing well although I'm itching to replace some of the bigger trees now. Some of them were donated (the two outside ones,) so my co-conspirator
is not wanting to pull them. I'm hoping realism will win! :o)
Have a great warm and cozy week. We shall see you in the miniature garden! :o)
Whatever you do make it fun,
About Last Week's Miniature Garden...
This is the same miniature garden that I've used multiple times. I'll need to think more about when I planted it up for the first time, but I've traced it back to 2013 so far. My trees are getting leggy so I'll need to plant something to hide them a bit more and create some layers, OR get a miniature house to put under it, OR maybe a tree house -
?
About the Plants: The trees from left to right are Maureen Hinoki Cypress, Sawara Cypress (tall, out of photo,) Sky Pencil Japanese Holly with the leaves, Tsatumi Hinoki Cypress and a Fernspray Hinoki Cypress with the yarn-bomb on the right. I can't tell you how long I've had this garden so no wonder my shrubs are getting spindly! I just replanted it a couple of months ago
but I'll have to do more with this design now. I'll shear the trees a bit in the spring too.
In front, from left to right, Dwarf Mondo Grass is with the wee turtle. There's a miniature Azalea (that I've been abusing accidentally,) beside the rock. Dwarf Saxifrage behind the bench. Alpine Water Ferns behind the yarn-bombed Fernspray. A few Hens & Chicks are in the far right corner.
See More of the Same Garden...
You can also see this same miniature garden, our Miniature Farm Garden in the first Gardening in Miniature: Create Your Own Tiny Living World book on pages 244 and 140-141, photographed in 2013-2014.
See past photos of the same miniature garden on any of these blogs from my Mini Garden Guru blog. I'm sure there are more!

ABOUT OUR SHIPPING: We ship internationally (- but not the plants!) All shipping costs are checked by Steve and we refund any savings promptly because of our wide range of unique inventory: we ship tiny miniatures, heavy patio materials and living plants, sometimes the automatic shipping
calculator "packs" the order in multiple boxes which costs more. Steve can pack better than any online shipping calculator can - if we can save you money on shipping, we will.
