Hi ,

Thank you for all your kind notes from last week's Mini Garden Gazette! The saying, "doing the thing you love to do will spread more love," has never been so important these this day, eh?

And thank you for reading! I can see all the people that open this and it's very heartwarming - and motivating! I've got some exciting NEW things for you below!

ABOVE: My overgrown miniature garden that Steve and I planted about 5 years ago. I haven't been thinning or pruning so you can see how "easy" miniature gardens are to maintain. :o) Steve wants to pull it apart for a do-over but I think I'll chain myself to one of the trees in protest. Lol! I'm not done with it yet!

That's a Loowit Hemlock tree on the right, and a Tompa Dwarf Spruce behind my hand on the left. The tiny leaves in between the stones are Elfin Thyme, the rosettes next to the stump are the Hens and Chicks. It's my Stairway to Nowhere as the path just runs into a tree at the top of the stair. I really need to work on that...!

Saved the best for last: Last week's Gazette was getting too long so I saved Suzanne's letter and gnome garden photos for this week. It's always fun to get photos of miniature gardens in the mail! I love it! Suzanne is from Plymouth, a port city in Devon in southwest England - it looks like an awesome place to live! Thank you for the very thoughtful note and photos. Now beam me over to play Suzanne!

Mini-Mini-Garden-Tutorial

"Can I buy some outdoor plants from you and
put them in a pot and put them outside
in our Wisconsin weather?"

Yes you can, great question!

You can plant a container any time (weather extremes excepted!) but the plants will need to “harden-off” to get used to your colder temperatures.

You harden-off the plants by gradually introducing the plants to the cold by leaving them outside for half a day for a couple of days, then a full day for a couple of days, then eventually overnight in a sheltered spot - for a couple of days - then you can move them anywhere. Over the course of the week you’ll have them used to your outdoor temperatures.

You can do this with the entire miniature garden after it’s planted, or just with the plants and then plant everything outside. Be sure to choose plants that are hardy for you area.

And just be aware that the plant’s roots prefer to be frozen rather than freeze dried, so you might have to water the container in the middle of February, for example. You should be able to see if the soil is coming away from the pot's edge if it gets too dry.

Oh, and chose a pot that can withstand freezing. Make sure your regular potting soil isn’t frozen well-ahead of time - I had that happen at a gig in PA a couple of years ago. It was painful to wait for the big bag of soil to thaw. Lol! :o)

NOTE: We can hold your plants until after the polar vortex too! Harden them off as instructed and they'll be ready for the next polar vortex (- heaven forbid!)
