THANK A VETERAN

**Photos may take a moment to load**

Hi ,

Remember to thank a veteran this weekend! I want to include active military and the families of the fallen when thinking of who to thank this weekend. I'm grateful each and every day for the people that are called to serve, for doing something that I could not do to keep this country and the world, a safer place for everybody. A thousand thank yous!!

It was a whirl-wind trip to Philly last weekend for my gigs at the Plow and Hearth, Marlon, NJ, store and the Philadelphia Miniaturia Show. Welcome all the new subscribers and a shout-out to all the fellow Miniature Gardeners who came to see me! I'm humbled and grateful that I am able to serve you. I will continue with more next week - this week got away from me - we met a few fun miniaturists that I would love for you to meet PLUS some really cool garden miniature ideas!

Winter is coming. Just in case your like me and haven't prepped for it yet, I've posted some info from the Mini Garden Guru blog below. Oh, and our Etsy store should be re-opened by next week!

Remember to thank a Vet!

Whatever you do, make it fun,

ABOVE: Our Miniature Garden Society community outreach installation at the Old Soldier's Home in Orting, Washington, is doing well and now being taken care of by some of the residents. :o)

~~~~~~~~
Miniature Garden Society Community Outreach: We had to replace the Elf Dwarf Spruce with the Blue Planet Dwarf Spruce (the blue-green globe-shaped shrub on the hill.) The Elf didn't make it through our hottest summer on record. This Blue Planet Spruce should do much better as it was planted this week as, in general, silver and blue-green plants are more drought tolerant - interesting, eh? The wee spruce will be able to get established throughout the winter and not be as sensitive to the occasional dry soil next summer. Raising that hill up, however, allows the soil to dry out faster than if the garden was planted at the same level so I'm thinking of adding another ground-cover underneath it to help keep the soil damp in-between watering sessions. The other trees are doing great, most of the ground covers are doing well save for Squirrel!
Oh Deer!
There were a lot of fellow Miniature Gardeners that expressed frustration on their deer problem at the Philly Show. The latest that I've learned is when the deer are hungry enough, they'll eat anything! So, if you have some insight into the deer-resistant plant list this blog post, please drop me a line so I can add the info to the blog for others.  OR if you have anything that you know works well, please share that too.
You can leave a comment on the blog or email me anytime.
Miniature Garden Society Community Outreach: We got there just as the rains came. I didn't check the weather. Doh! But the garden was fine - just a little covered in leaves. It took us just a few minutes to clean it up and plant the spruce. The rest of the time we enjoyed talking to the staff and residents.
Miniature Garden Society Community Outreach: Someone added that rain gauge so we left it in there. Squirrel upsets the Hens and Chicks so they are having a hard time getting established. But all the accessories are still accounted for and the staff and residents are still enjoying it. Success!
