The elusive Kingsville Boxwood is possibly the slowest growing boxwood with a growth rate of less than 1/2" year - which makes it hard to find for sale so the quantities are always limited. Full sun to part sun. Hardy to -10F. Some have had success growing this indoors, we've had more success growing it outside in our miniature
gardens. We're experimenting with it indoors now. See it here.
Quick Miniature Gardening Tips
~
Deadheading ~
- The act of trimming a spent flower from a plant before it goes to seed, to encourage more blooms. Or when one used to follow the Grateful Dead. :o)
~ Going on Vacation? ~
A lot of times I hear about people losing their miniature gardens while on vacation. Some extreme weather can't be helped, but you can spare your plant sitter a session or two with these tips. If the sitter
doesn't have to go as frequently, you'll get better attention when they are there - in theory, that is.
- For miniature gardens in containers:
- Place a saucer or low-bowl underneath the pot
to corral the water that drains out of the drainage hole. The collected water will be absorbed back into the soil in the pot eventually. Don't let the pot sit in water like this all the time, but for a day or three here and there, it'll be okay. This way the plant sitter can water every few days, instead of every day
- Place the potted miniature garden in full shade to
slow down the soil from drying out. Again, don't leave it there indefinitely, but for a few days, it'll be okay.
- For in-ground
miniature gardens where watering is not banned:
- For spot with full-full sun that will need watering everyday. Get a hose-timer to turn on either a soaker hose or sprinkler in the early, early morning. You'll have to figure out how long to time it for, it will depend upon your set-up.
- Get one of those inexpensive vinyl canopies and put it over the garden. It will slow down the drying of the soil and keep the plant's roots cooler for longer. Weigh it down with buckets full of water or cinderblocks with ropes or bungee cords secured tightly. Use the pins that come with the canopy and stake the legs into the soil, using your foot to drive it in.
- If you're just going for a couple of days and it's hot, overwater your garden just before you go and throughly drench the soil. It will take a couple/few days to dry out completely while you're away.
