HAPPY EARTH DAY!
**Photos may take a moment to load**

Hi ,

Happy Earth Day!

We hope spring has finally arrived in your area. Thankfully, the normal spring weather has returned to Seattle so it doesn't feel like summer vacation in April any more. :o)

In this edition of the Mini Garden we have a topic that is "dear" to us. We are very excited to offer some genuine, made in the USA accessories AND we have a few of our fave trees on sale to celebrate Earth Day with because, after all, she is our business partner and we love her.

As always, thank you for being a subscriber!

Whatever you do, make it fun,

FROM THE INBOX

Oh dear, we're getting deer questions and we live in the city! Can you help us with any suggestions that work to keep the deer out of the miniature gardens?

Hi Janit,

Would you be able to recommend outdoor trees and plants that the local deer won't be interested in munching on?

Thanks,

Karen

Hi Karen!

Thank you for your e-mail.  I did a little digging, Karen, and from what I can find out the deer do not like the strong-scented plants, like herbs and lavender for example - if you are making a larger miniature garden or fairy garden, these could work.

BUT this strategy might be better: Deer love red-twig dogwoods. I’ve heard of gardeners planting these in a strategic place on the edge of the garden so the deer will find them first, and fill-up on them instead. Apparently these dogwood shrubs can handle the constant pruning/munching too.

Thanks again - I’m in the city, so I can’t speak from experience, so this never came up on my own radar.

Best,

Janit

- We've also heard that deer hate dachshunds  - they are scared silly of them.

Do you have any other suggestions to keep the deer away?
Email us here, and we'll include it in a future edition of the Mini Garden Gazette.

ICYMI: GENTLE REMINDER
ABOUT POTTING SOIL:

Our plants do not need the fortified soil with added fertilizers like Miracle-Gro Soil. The unnecessary fertilizers burn the plant's roots. Avoid anything with water-retaining polymers too, it doesn't let the soil dry out enough in between watering sessions and gradually smothers the roots. Roots need air, which is why you don't "pack" the soil in tightly around the rootball when you plant. If you must use this type of soil, use the high-fertilizing soil for your heavy-feeders, like annuals and vegetables.

Choose an organic potting soil for your containers. Add compost instead of topsoil to your garden beds. There is enough nutrients in any fresh soil to last two years for our plants.
