Happy
SpringEasterPassoverRamadan!
Hi ,
Or how about just "Happy Day?" :o)
I hope this finds everyone safe, well and warm - unless you're in Florida, then I hope this finds you safe, well and cool - I think... What a crazy spring we're having weather-wise! This week in Seattle, we've had a little bit of everything: snow, hail, rain, wind & sun combined with freezing temps at night and day-time temps in the mid-50s! Arg. I don't know
wether to plant seeds or hibernate! :o)
ABOUT OUR SPRING MINIATURE GARDEN:
The cold weather has put a damper on my spring gardening this week, so you probably recognize the miniature garden in the photos for this week's Gazette. Most recently, I used it for our 20th Anniversary garden last fall.
This old friend is one of our bigger miniature gardens in a 15 gallon galvanized washtub. See below for the 2012 "Farm Garden" photo and you can see how it has been growing and evolving with us for the last 10 years. (Also see the Gazette, October 7th, 2021 for an older photo of it decked-out for Halloween.)
The tub had a big leak in the seam on the bottom so I didn't have to drill any holes for drainage. It's worked out well and it has given me plenty of room for both a garden and room to play with my miniatures.
One thing to note, that does come up every so often with new miniature gardeners, your miniature garden will grow and change just like your full-sized garden. Just because it's miniature, doesn't mean it doesn't grow. For us gardeners, this is a good thing simply because it gives us an opportunity to "garden."
And this is why terrariums don't really interest me - they are too independent! They really don't need much maintenance and can thrive without me. Sniff! (Lol!) But I like to garden any chance I get which is one of the many reasons why I love this hobby so much - it's interactive! It needs you and you need it! :o) (If you're looking for a garden that doesn't
change or grow much, look into terrariums or dollhouse gardens.)
Have a great weekend whatever you celebrate! Remember that parties and family get togethers are really a captive audience to show off your miniature garden skills. (Heh, heh, heh... ) It's a perfect time to impress your family and friends with your hobby!
Whatever you do, make it fun, be safe and make a miniature garden,
ABOUT THE ABOVE PHOTO: The tree on the left is a leggy Cumulus Cypress. The skinny broadleaf in the middle is the Sky Pencil Holly and the tree right with that great trunk is the Fernspray Hinoki Cypress that I've gradually shaped into a tree form. The Hinoki in the left, front is a Gemstone Hinoki Cypress, another tree that I've been training into a
tree-form.

The shrub behind the Adirondack Bench is a dwarf Azalea. If you ever see one of these for sale, grab it. They are really rare, very easy to grow (if you're in an area where they thrive, zones 6 thru 9) and they are really low
maintenance. The flower isn't miniature on this one, but I have seen some with really tiny flowers that are just darling.

Up on the NEW Mini Garden Guru Blog :o)
A checklist for your containers.
The fern to the right of the chair is our Alpine Water Fern that has become a favorite. (When the new leaves appear for spring, I'll trim back the ones that are browning.) Our Miniature DIY Art Poles remain a colorful addition to add
wherever some interest is needed. We now have a bigger size of poles, if you find these are too small for you to color-in.
"The Farm Garden" - this photo was taken in June of 2012, just before a big garden show, so I must have built it before that. Compare the trees in the newer photos and you'll see just how long these plants can
last in a miniature garden. (The Fernspray Gold Hinoki on the right turns gold in the sun, which is why it looks different.) This garden has certainly grown and evolved throughout the years!
Note that the deeper/bigger the pot, the longer your miniature garden will last in that pot. There's nothing wrong with planting in smaller pots - a lot of mine are in much smaller pots and have lasted a few years - just know that you'll need to transplant it sooner.
How Do You Know Your Mini Garden Needs Repotting? Look under the pot for the drainage holes, if there are roots coming out of the holes that is an excellent sign that the garden needs repotting.

ABOUT OUR SHIPPING:
We Ship Internationally (- but not the plants!)
All shipping costs are checked by Steve and we refund any savings promptly because of our wide range of unique inventory: we ship tiny miniatures, heavy patio materials and living plants, sometimes the automatic shipping calculator "packs" the order in multiple boxes which costs more. Steve can pack better than any online shipping
calculator can - if we can save you money on shipping, we will.
