Hi ,
I hope this finds you and yours enjoying a little Irish somethin'-somethin' today. If not, I've got you covered in this Mini Garden Gazette ~> written by one of your (hopefully) favorite Irish lassies! Happy St. Patrick's Day!
So, it's been a weird week here at Two Green Thumbs. It took me three days to get this St. Paddy's day miniature garden together - AND it was already made!! Lol! Arg! BUT there is one thing that got me out of my head and made it happen...
you know what I'm going to say here but it WORKS.
I spent the day playing with plants and miniature and my miniature gardens and got myself out of my funky mood. YES! I actually, and finally, after two days of fighting myself and getting nothing done, (I get points for trying though!) I listened to my own advice. I logged off, put on some fun music and PLAYED.
I made a couple of indoor miniature gardens for the Miniature Garden Society. I practiced more with using polymer clay (aka FIMO) and made that top hat in the garden above. I made a couple more peace flags. When it stopped raining, I cleaned up my weedy in-ground miniature garden, and I was able to get Steve to chop a big trunk out of the middle which did NOT go
so well... (insert eye-roll here!)
...Nevertheless it is HIGHLY recommended! Playing really is a part of self-care / self-nurturing that gets overlooked way too often. If you do something you love to do, you are spreading more love.
Alright, enough of the mushy stuff. We have a shortlist of to-dos for the Spring season here below. AND I have some plant sets, Easter items and, and...
May the good luck of the Irish be with you ALL year!
Whatever you do, make it fun,

ABOVE: Our favorite Variegated Boxwood tree with Dwarf Mondo Grass on the left and a Bluestar creeper on the right that I'm waiting to see if it comes back but it gave me room to put my Green-man head and my shamrocks stakes for this photo. (How is that for glass-half-full thinking? :o)
~~~
This garden was built in June of 2017 - The St. Patrick's Day photo was taken today, 5 years later.
I didn't do much maintenance to this garden over the years, just watered it. And, it looks like I swapped out the bedding plant on the right at some point.
The photo below with my hand in the shot, with all the accessories in it, was for a workshop promo that I was doing at the time. That is a Variegated Boxwood tree with Dwarf Mondo Grass on the left and Baby
Tears on the right.
I now need to do a bit of maintenance as you can see some of the leaves on the boxwood are a bit orange - which means for this type of boxwood, it's a bit stressed out. (**Some boxwoods turn orange in the cold temperatures naturally and does NOT mean they are stressed.**)
And, you can see by the brown tips on the Dwarf Mondo Grass that it has needs. I think it probably needs fresh potting soil. The pot is only 7" deep.
Spring To-Dos!!
- Shovel-prune your more aggressive ground covers. From our inventory, they would be the Fairy Vines (Muelenbeckia) and the Brass Buttons (Leptinella.) In some areas the Baby Tears can get aggressive too, but I like how it spreads. Shovel pruning means to take a shovel and slice all the way around the main plant, severing the underground runner-roots
to prevent them from spreading. Do this again in late spring.
- Shear your deciduous shrubs back into shape, like any of the Spireas (can be cut down to 6",) Wisteria (shear gently into over all shape.) Wait to shear the barberries or you'll cut the spring flowers off (shear gently after it flowers if needed.)
- Trim any deciduous trees carefully, if at all.
- For any tree or shrub, cut off any dead branches or branches that are hanging downwards.
- Anything leggy is a sign to pinch-back or cut-back. To be sure, wait to see new growth either at the crown of the plant, or along the stems before cutting it back.
- More next week!
- Let me know your questions on any of your Two Green Thumbs' plants, hit reply!
ABOUT OUR SHIPPING:
We Ship Internationally (- but not the plants!)
All shipping costs are checked by Steve and we refund any savings promptly because of our wide range of unique inventory: we ship tiny miniatures, heavy patio materials and living plants, sometimes the automatic shipping calculator "packs" the order in multiple boxes which costs more. Steve can pack better than any online shipping
calculator can - if we can save you money on shipping, we will.
We appreciate and serve everyone regardless of race, color,
gender, politics, religion or who they love.
Viva la difference!
If we were all the same, the world would be a
very, very boring place to live.
